Legal help for low-income individuals

Description

Legal aid program that offers legal counseling and/or representation for low-income individuals, typically in the areas of disability law, elder law and family law

Free or low cost legal services help people who are unable to afford a lawyer get access to the court system.

Additional Information

Provides legal representation and community legal education to low-income people and seniors in northwestern Minnesota counties

Representation focuses on priority cases, generally those most critical to life, health, safety, shelter, and basic subsistence income.

Help may be available for issues that include but are not limited to:

  • Consumer issues like debt collector harassment, utility shut off, paycheck problems
  • Special Education complaints
  • Employment issues, unemployment benefit denial
  • Family, custody, and divorce
  • Other public benefit appeals
  • Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income appeals
  • Housing issues
  • Public Assistance and Disability Benefits
  • Family law, custody, domestic abuse
  • Creating a simple will, power of attorney, or health care directive

Let them know if you have another type of legal problem. If they don't handle it, they may be able to provide written information or a referral.

Income at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines.

Criminal and personal injury (or any case where there would be damages awarded) cases are not eligible.
